From a Tourist Brochure for the State of Saxony
Before:
"With its exceptionally diverse
rock formations the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are probably unique of their
kind in Europe. Although there are records of one or two climbing expeditions
in the early 18th century, mountaineering and climbing generally have started
in 1864 when five gymnasts from Schandau climbed the Falkenstein."
Analysis:
poor grammatical structures
- a mixture of singular and
plural possesives 'its' and 'their'. To speak singularly of these mountains,
we should use the term 'mountain range'
- something can only be
'one of a kind' or 'unique in kind'.
- 'have started' is present
perfect. The past simple tense is
appropriate here, as it
is simple 'story-telling' and has no connection to the present.
After:
"The exceptionally diverse
rock formations probably make the Elbe Sandstone Mountains unique in Europe.
Although there are records of climbing expeditions dating back to the early
18th century, mountaineering and climbing generally began in earnest in
1864 when five high school students from Schandau climbed the Falkenstein."
